Hi everyone.

I’ve just been in a lesson with Andrew, my student who lives in Moscow. (A very talented young guy).

We’re reading: “The Hobbit”

(The Hobbit)

And we found: “the Gandalf who was responsible for so many lads and lasses going off into the blue for mad adventures?”.

“into the blue”.
What does it mean? Well into the blue, means going to the unknown; I wonder if it’s origins are something to do with “the deep blue sea” and exploring it. But it means you’re going to go somewhere and you don’t know where you’re going or what will happen.

Now, if someone arrives “out of the blue“, it has a different meaning; it means that their visit was unexpected.

“The Blues” is a genre of music that comes from African slaves in the south of America and I found this on Wikipedia

One explanation for the origin of the “blues” is that it derived from mysticism involving blue indigo, which was used by many West African cultures in death and mourning ceremonies where all the mourner’s garments would have been dyed blue to indicate suffering.

I thought it would be fun to give a little lesson on how to play “the Blues”, so you can click the video below and see it 🙂

Oh I’ve just remembered, you’ve also got “blue movies” which are pornographic movies, and you have “blue language” which means you’re using profanities: “This post is fuckin excellent!” CRAIG! Your language is a bit blue!!”

But I was illustrating my point hehehe
